and We had the opportunity to go!

Being from Michigan we thought we were well versed on ‘all things Michigan music’ but recently discovered Smiling Acres Music Festival.
 
So through town we traveled and as cell service started to diminish, diving deeper into the beautiful Michigan farmland country the roads become dirt-only and after a few GPS-trusting turns, we had arrived.
 
This year the festival was officially Friday through Sunday but they allowed Thursday night camping setup if you choose that option at registration. Consider this option if visiting in the future as there is a nice campfire vibe that has acoustic music and sets the right mood for a great weekend.
 
With so many artists we couldn’t have captured them all, but wow did we get to see some great performances. Musical acts included Smiling Acres’ own “Smiling Acres Bluegrass Band”, Patty Pershayla and the Mayhaps (which we’ve had the pleasure of working with previously. Check out those videos!), i.am.james, and so many more.
 
Taking a break from the music we visited many vendors who had differing products ranging from Tie-Dyes, Fairy Gardens, healing stones, puppets, glassware and some other just plain cool stuff. Truly a Hippie’s playground.
 

Finally, I’d be remiss to not mention the excellent food and the staff who make it. As some may not know the origin of this festival was family and friends who would annually get together for a 4th of July celebration which grew and after relocation for growth safety, was made public and this is now their 4th year being official. So why does that matter? Although there are other food vendors here, the primary one is run by the family and as Puff Peace was a sponsor this year, we were able to see more intimately the hustle and bustle behind-the-scenes that was required for us to all have a weekend full of fun. So hats off to the cooks, groundskeepers, and (overnight) security;  the unsung heroes.

If you’re thinking of stopping by next year, remember this is a family-friendly festival with lots to offer, but sshhhh… we can’t let it get too big :))

Handmade Moments

Well It’s hard to talk about style, attitude and voice without including “Handmade Moments” which is comprised of Anna Moss and Joel Ludford. Anna and Joel are gifted individuals that have been singing and making music together for over ten years. They have traveled around the US and various parts of the world, adding more fans at every gig.
They are Multi-instrumentalists with a wonderful harmonious sound that this song accentuates. They truly put every ounce of their being into their music! That is why we chose this song in particular to highlight today, It is called “Policia” and has always stood out as one of our personal favorites by these guys!
If you haven’t been familiar with “Handmade Moments” before this then you certainly are now!

The Mudd Club

Another Highlight promo we would like to do this month is on a group called The Mudd Club.
 
They are a band originally from Kansas, USA but are now located in England. The band consists of Sadie Morningstar-Lead Guitar and Vocals, Joe Trudgeon- Bass Guitar, Julian West- Drums and Steve Frye- Alternate Drummer.
The Mudd Club also has a new album released called “Give Me a Thrill”. These guys have a great sound and a solid beat that I would describe as a retro/punk/rockabilly rock-n-roll. I think it has a refreshing sound. The lyrics and sassy quirky expressions by Sadie really speaks to the style, attitude and voice that we’ve been talking about that really puts these guys over the top. I must admit that the skull necklace and holes in the fishnet stockings don’t hurt!
 
Anyway, enjoy! I think this song is a real gem.

Cat Clyde

Our next Highlight Promo comes from a Canadian singer/songwriter musician that has been around for quite a few years and probably has world acclaim by now.
 
              Her name is Cat Clyde and is loved for her unique voice and her folky lyrics and style. We could do quite an extensive write up for her achievements over the years. She also has recently released a new album titled “Down Rounder”.
 
              Today though we are here to focus on a single song that she and her band covered a couple of years ago called “Can’t Let You Go”, originally done by Sugar Pie Desanto (circa 1960) Cat and her band; Julie Cromarty singing harmony, Mr. Wes Martin on Bass and Mr. Graham Young on Guitar do an exquisite version that is slowed down and grooved to perfection. You want to talk about Style, Attitude and Voice? It’s all there, with a big scoop of cool folded in. A truly top-notch rendition, so enjoy.
